Malayalam actor Indrans appeared for school exams at the age of 68

Veteran Malayalam actor Indrans has been one of the most impactful artists to have come from the film industry in Kerala. He has played several memorable supporting characters in hundreds of films and established himself as a versatile actor. He joined the film industry in 1981 at the age of 25. He began his career as a costume designer and later transitioned into acting. Recently, the veteran actor made news for going back to school.

Indrans goes back to school

Before entering movies, Indrans’ life was marred by poverty. He had to drop out of school after studying till Grade 4 as his family could not afford his education. However, in his 60s, he returned to school to complete his basic education. This came after he was honoured at the 69th National Film Awards for his role in the Malayalam film Home (2021).

After winning his first National Film Award, Indrans appeared for the Class VII equivalency examinations conducted by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority in 2024, taking a significant step toward fulfilling his long-held dream of completing formal education. Although he initially planned to directly attempt the Class 10 equivalency examinations, he could not proceed, as a person is allowed to attend that test only after clearing the Class VII equivalency examinations and obtaining the certificate.

“My schooling and childhood were all in Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram. I was very good at my studies and consistently got the first rank. Back then, bright students were made to sit on the front benches; so I was always a ‘front-bench’ student,” Reporter Live quoted Indrans as saying.

He added, “It was while I was in the fourth grade that the uniform became an issue. I didn’t go to school that whole year. The following year, we didn’t have the money to buy books and a uniform together. The school had made uniforms mandatory. That is how I had to end my studies. We were seven children at home, and I was the third.”

He will next be seen in the Malayalam industry’s most anticipated film Patriot, which reunites Mohanlal and Mammootty on screen after nearly two decades. The film, directed by Mahesh Narayan, also stars Fahadh Faasil and Kunchacko Boban in lead roles.
