Vijay gets notice from Madras HC over Rs 100 crore gap in election affidavit

On Monday, April 20, the Madras High Court issued a notice to actor-politician Vijay, the Election Commission of India and the Income Tax Department after a plea was filed alleging discrepancies in the election affidavits filed by the TVK chief for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. As a result, the parties have been asked to share their responses before the next hearing.

Petition filed against Rs 100 crore mismatch in Vijay`s election affidavits

A Bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadikari and Justice Arul Murugan sought responses from Vijay, Election Commission of India and the Income Tax Department after the petitioner claimed inconsistent disclosures in the two affidavits filed by the actor. “This is an irregularity. More than 100 crores not disclosed in one of the constituencies. One week [for instructions]. Private party notice process as well as private notice,” the court stated.

The petition was filed by V Vignesh, who contended that Vijay`s Form 26 affidavits are marked by inconsistent disclosures. It was highlighted that the value of movable assets was declared as Rs 224 crore in the Tiruchi East affidavit, while in the Perambur constituency, the affidavit showed the value as Rs 105 crore.

The discrepancy of over Rs 100 crore was reportedly not disclosed in the Perambur affidavit. Taking note of the difference, the Court orally remarked that such a discrepancy comprised an “irregularity,” particularly given the magnitude of the variation. Although it did not express any final view on the merits of the allegations, it issued notice to all the respondents and allotted a time for a response.

The matter will be taken up after the respondents file their replies.

Vijay`s Tamil Nadu election campaign

For the unversed, Vijay is contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). On his electoral debut, he filed nominations from two constituencies, Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchi East.

Vijay`s campaign has concentrated mostly on Tamil Nadu`s coastal belts, including Ramanathapuram, highlighting a focused strategy to consolidate minority and fisherfolk votes. TVK has also fielded candidates from the community in key constituencies, indicating an intent to convert outreach into representation.

Tamil Nadu is set to vote in a single phase on April 23, while the counting will take place on May 4.
