Vaazha 2 is now the highest grossing Malayalam film in Kerala

Malayalam cinema has a brand new box office record. Vaazha 2: Biopic Of A Billion Bros has done the unthinkable, by becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. The coming-of-age comedy drama, featuring a cast of fresh faces, has beaten Kalyani Priyadarshan`s Lokah: Chapter 1 in the process at the Kerala box office. The amazing part is it has done it in just 25 days.

Vaazha 2 becomes Kerala`s highest-grossing film

Vaazha 2 has overtaken Kalyani Priyadarshan`s Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra to claim the top spot at the Malayalam box office. Lokah Chapter 1 previously held the record with Rs 120.85 crore, while Mohanlal`s Thudarum stood at Rs 118.90 crore. Both were massive hits, but it looks like Vaazha 2 has now gone past both of them.

By its fourth weekend, Vaazha 2 recorded around Rs 121 crore in Kerala alone, surpassing the previous record of Rs 120.85 crore held by Lokah Chapter 1. As a result, the film is now the undisputed number one at the Kerala box office of all time.

Industry trackers highlight that the film achieved this milestone with unprecedented speed, crossing the Rs 100 crore mark in Kerala in just 16 days. Additionally, it has also become only the third Malayalam film in the 21st century to exceed 80 lakh ticket sales in the state, joining the likes of classics such as Pulimurugan.

About Vaazha 2

Directed by debutant Savin SA and written by Vipin Das, Vaazha 2 was reportedly made on a modest budget of around Rs 10 crore. This makes the film`s box office performance an exceptional return on investment. Meanwhile, the film’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Interestingly, the film’s strong run isn’t limited to just Kerala. Globally, Vaazha 2 has crossed Rs 220 crore in just 25 days, with over Rs 124 crore coming from Kerala alone. Despite its box office record in the state, it currently ranks behind films like Thudarum, Manjummel Boys, Lokah Chapter 1, and L2: Empuraan in the list of highest-grossing Malayalam films worldwide.

A Telugu-dubbed version of the film was recently released, and the night shows are still witnessing over 40 per cent occupancy in key theatres. Trade experts predict its run to continue well into May as well, adding to what is already one of the most unexpected box office successes in recent times.
