Despite a 10 per cent water cut across Mumbai from May 15, the seven lakes supplying the city are only 19.22 per cent full as of Friday morning. The lakes currently hold 2,78,199 million litres of water against a total storage capacity of 14,47,363 million litres.
Supply shift
BMC usually supplies 3950-4100 million litres of water daily. Following the cut, daily supply has been reduced to 3600-3750 million litres. Without the cut, the existing stock would have lasted only till the first week of July.
Rain worry
The civic body imposed the cut after the India Meteorological Department forecast weak southwest monsoon rainfall this year. BMC aims to stretch the available stock till August 17 and has sought 237 million cubic meters of water from Vaitarna and Bhatsa through the Urban Development Department.
Better buffer
This year’s stock is still higher than the levels recorded on the same day over the past two years. On May 22, 2025, the stock stood at 16.88 per cent, while in 2024 it was 10.67 per cent. The IMD has predicted that the monsoon will reach Mumbai on June 10 this year. In 2025, the monsoon arrived on May 25.
Water sources
Mumbai gets its water from Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, and Tulsi lakes.
