CR collects record Rs 16.13 crore in ticket checking drives

The Central Railway on Saturday said that its Mumbai division has achieved a record in fine collections during ticket checking drives conducted in April 2026, an official statement said.

Rs 16.13 crore collection in April marks the highest-ever monthly collection, surpassing the previous record of Rs 14.50 crore set in May 2023, it said.

During April 2026, ticket checking teams detected and penalised around 2.27 lakh cases of irregular travel across Mail and Express and suburban trains, including Mumbai AC local trains. This is a 56 per cent increase compared to 1.45 lakh cases recorded in April 2025.

The total penalty recovered also saw a major jump, rising by 166 per cent from Rs 6.07 crore in April 2025 to Rs 16.13 crore this year.

Second class coaches see highest violations

According to an official statement, frequent checking drives in second class coaches proved particularly effective. Around 1.58 lakh cases were detected in April 2026, up 50 per cent from 1.05 lakh cases in the same month last year.

Penalty collections from these cases rose sharply to Rs 13.06 crore, compared to Rs 5.03 crore in April 2025.

Mumbai AC locals under watch

Special drives in AC local trains also showed results. The officials detected 12,698 cases of irregular travel, a 22 per cent increase from last year, the statement said.

Penalty collections from Mumbai AC local trains reached Rs 39.66 lakh, up 15 per cent from Rs 34.39 lakh in April 2025.

Other violations and penalties

The Central Railway said that additional enforcement action included the following-

– First class coach violations: 11,877 cases with Rs 3.79 crore recovered

– Fare difference cases in Mail and Express trains: 35,785 cases with Rs 2.20 crore recovered

– Unbooked luggage cases: 8,723 cases with Rs 9.95 lakh collected

Strict enforcement drives continue

Officials said regular and special ticket checking drives are conducted across stations and trains to curb ticketless travel and ensure passenger comfort and safety.

These efforts not only penalise offenders but also act as a deterrent for others .

Central Railway has urged passengers to travel responsibly by purchasing valid tickets. The railway reiterated its zero-tolerance approach towards ticketless travel and its commitment to providing a safe and comfortable journey, the statement said.
