​Fire breaks out at CSMT station redevelopment site; no injuries reported 

A fire broke out near at the redevelopment site of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) station in Mumbai on Saturday.

Sources said that the incident occurred at the new division building construction site being developed as part of the CSMT station redevelopment project under the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA).

No injuries were reported in the incident, sources said, adding that fire and emergency teams were immediately informed about the blaze.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, they said.

According to the officials, the incident was reported at 4:55 pm near Platform No. 18 on the Kalyan side of CSMT station.

The fire occurred at a railway-owned ground-plus- 3 storey building that is currently under construction.

Officials said the blaze was limited to materials stored in the level 2 basement of the building. The affected items included paint, rubber coating material, and plastic sheets. The blaze did not spread beyond this section of the site.

Fire brought under control

Firefighting action was taken immediately, and the fire was extinguished at 4:56 pm, just a minute after it was reported. The quick response helped prevent any escalation or damage to nearby structures. There was also no impact on train services at CSMT, one of Mumbai’s busiest railway stations, officials said.

Ongoing redevelopment project

The CSMT station redevelopment is a major infrastructure project being carried out by the RLDA, aimed at modernising the heritage station and improving passenger facilities and operational capacity.

The redevelopment of CSMT, one of Mumbai’s busiest railway hubs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is currently underway.

The project, being carried out under the RLDA and it aims to transform the historic station into a modern transport hub while preserving its Victorian Gothic architectural character.

Once completed, the CSMT redevelopment project will significantly upgrade passenger experience by introducing separate arrival and departure areas, a spacious central concourse, and modern facilities.

The 85-day mega block

A major 85-day mega block was earlier imposed on the project from February 1 to April 26 to facilitate large-scale infrastructure work.

During this period, development activities were focused on Platforms 16 and 17. As a result, long-distance train operations from these platforms have been suspended temporarily.

Several trains were diverted, with halts arranged at Dadar and Thane stations to manage passenger movement during the construction phase.
