Thane: Ghodbunder Road repair works to be completed by May 30, says civic chief

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Tuesday said Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has directed all agencies to complete ongoing repair and infrastructure works on Ghodbunder Road by May 30 to ensure smoother traffic flow ahead of the monsoon.

According to the TMC, the directive was issued following a joint inspection of the arterial stretch and adjoining areas involving officials from the civic body, the Public Works Department, metro authorities, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

Key stretches inspected across Ghodbunder Road

The inspection covered major junctions and traffic-sensitive locations, including Kapurbawdi Junction, Vartak Nagar, the Chitalsar Police Station area, Manpada Bridge, Brahmand Chowk, Dongarpada, Anand Nagar Junction, Kasarvadavali, Owla Chowk, and the Gaimukh stretch.

Officials also reviewed conditions along the Eastern Express Highway, service roads, and the Gaimukh Ghat section. The TMC said instructions were issued for immediate concretisation of the road shoulder near Gaimukh Chowpatty.

Focus on infrastructure bottlenecks and pending works

During the inspection, authorities assessed multiple ongoing works such as water pipeline installations under the AMRUT scheme, road concretisation beneath metro pillars, service road merging, paver block installation, slip road repairs, and junction improvements.

The TMC said all departments have been instructed to prioritise and complete pending works. Particular attention was given to the relocation of water pipelines and electric poles that are obstructing road merging work.

On the Gaimukh to Kapurbawdi stretch, inspections were conducted at Naglabunder, Anand Nagar Junction, Vavachal Bridge, Kasarvadavali, and the Gavlipada Metro Station area, focusing on bridge conditions and road connectivity.

Measures to address power issues and encroachments

Following complaints about power outages, the commissioner directed that a meeting be held with officials of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited to resolve the issue.

The TMC added that encroachments on footpaths along the corridor will be removed to improve pedestrian movement and reduce congestion.

Signage, parking zones and traffic planning

The civic body said plans are being prepared to develop traffic islands, bus bays, and designated auto-rickshaw stands along merged road sections.

Authorities have also been instructed to install clear signboards indicating parking and no-parking zones to streamline vehicular movement.

Drain cleaning ahead of monsoon

To minimise the risk of waterlogging, the TMC said it has directed thorough cleaning of main drains, culverts, and roadside gutters along Ghodbunder Road. Deep cleaning of culverts has also been ordered to ensure uninterrupted water flow during heavy rains.

Inspection conducted via public transport

In a move aimed at avoiding traffic disruption during the exercise, the commissioner and officials carried out the inspection using a TMC-run bus, the civic body said.

Civic appeal to residents

The TMC said pre-emptive measures are being planned at locations that witness recurring potholes during the monsoon. It also appealed to citizens to follow traffic rules to help reduce congestion during the ongoing works.
