Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday underlined the importance of a strong law and order system in driving the state’s development, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the Maharashtra Police and bringing it in line with global standards.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the 36th Maharashtra State Police Sports Meet 2026, held at the Armed Police Headquarters in Kalina. The event was attended by senior state officials, including ministers and top police leadership.
Shinde said the government’s role extends beyond issuing directives, emphasising that it stands firmly behind the police force. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and resources, including housing, well-equipped police stations, modern weaponry, vehicles, and advanced cyber security tools.
Sports meet likened to ‘Maha Olympics’ for police
Describing the sports meet as a major platform for showcasing talent, Shinde said the event reflects a different side of the police force.
Police personnel, usually seen in uniform, were today participating as athletes, he noted, adding that the competition serves as a “Maha Olympics” for the force. He encouraged participants, stating that every athlete taking part should already consider themselves a winner.
In a lighter moment, he remarked that while referees are present on the field, what will be recorded are sporting achievements rather than routine police documentation, drawing appreciation from attendees.
Police athletes gaining national and global recognition
Shinde pointed to the growing presence of Maharashtra Police athletes in national and international competitions, noting that their achievements extend beyond the state. He expressed optimism that such talent could eventually find representation at global sporting events, including the Olympics.
Sports seen as a means to reduce stress
Highlighting the demanding nature of police work, Shinde said personnel often spend long hours on duty, including during festivals, protests, and emergencies, frequently away from their families. In this context, he said, sporting activities play an important role in relieving stress and building team spirit within the force.
Strong policing key to Mumbai’s growth
Referring to Mumbai as a key economic driver, Shinde stressed that effective policing is central to sustaining growth and public confidence. He noted improvements in crime detection, stating that a significant proportion of cases are now resolved within a relatively short timeframe.
Infrastructure and talent within the force praised
Shinde also commended the facilities at the Kalina complex, including sports infrastructure and residential arrangements, and acknowledged the organisers’ efforts.
He highlighted the diverse capabilities of police personnel, noting their contributions not only in maintaining law and order but also in sports, music, writing, and other creative fields.
‘Khaki represents service and sacrifice’
Concluding his address, Shinde described the police uniform as a symbol of service, sacrifice, and patriotism. He extended his best wishes to participants and expressed hope that the event would set new benchmarks in performance.
