In view of enhancing commuter safety and improving track quality, Mumbai Metro One, on Thursday, April 30, initiated rail grinding operations as part of its proactive maintenance programme. The work is being carried out in collaboration with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, officials said.
Rail grinding is a crucial maintenance activity aimed at smoothing out irregularities on tracks, reducing wear and tear, and ensuring a safer and more comfortable ride for passengers.
Temporary speed restrictions imposed
Following the maintenance work, temporary speed restrictions have been imposed across certain sections of the corridor as a standard safety protocol. Due to this, commuters may experience minor delays in train services.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to prioritising passenger safety and maintaining efficient operations across the network.
MMRDA completes key steel span for Mumbai Metro Line 2B over Central Railway
Earlier, on April 27, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had successfully completed the installation of a key steel composite span for Mumbai Metro Line 2B across the Central Railway Harbour Line corridor between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations, marking a major milestone in the project’s progress.
Critical infrastructure milestone achieved
According to MMRDA, the work forms part of Phase III (Saraswat Nagar to Chembur), a crucial stretch aimed at enhancing connectivity across Mumbai. The authority stated that the completion of this span will help link major north–south and east–west transit routes, improving overall urban mobility.
The operation was executed within a designated railway block period, ensuring that suburban rail services continued without disruption.
Complex engineering over active railway lines
The structure, erected between Pier P663 and P664 near Kurla East, crosses the busy CSMT–Panvel Harbour Line. MMRDA said the steel span measures 41.5 metres in length and 11 metres in width and weighs approximately 178 metric tonnes.
The span comprises two composite steel girders forming a robust structural system. These components were fabricated in Hyderabad, transported to Mumbai, and assembled near the site before being launched.
Metro Line-6 clears key hurdle with 42-m span over Western Railway tracks
Mumbai Metro Line 6 (Pink Line) has cleared a major construction milestone with the successful erection of a key span over the Western Railway near Jogeshwari, as authorities explore opening the east-west corridor in phases.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Sunday completed a 42-metre steel composite span over active railway tracks within a 10-hour block.
The development comes as 87.7 per cent of the corridor’s civil work is complete, though crucial stretches over Western and Central Railway lines and the Kanjurmarg car shed remain pending. Officials said phased operations are being actively considered to allow early commuter access.
