‘She was hesitant’: Annu Kapoor opens up on Priyanka Chopra 7 Khoon Maaf row

Actor Annu Kapoor has once again revisited the long-standing controversy surrounding his remarks about co-star Priyanka Chopra during the making of 7 Khoon Maaf. In a recent interview, Kapoor clarified that the issue, which resurfaced over the years, had been widely misunderstood and exaggerated beyond its original context.

Annu Kapoor gets candid about 7 Khoon Maaf

The controversy dates back to the 2011 film directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, where Kapoor and Chopra shared screen space. At the time, reports suggested that Chopra had refused to perform an intimate scene, including a kiss, with Kapoor. His earlier comments on the matter had sparked backlash, with many interpreting them as insensitive. Revisiting the incident now, Kapoor attempted to set the record straight, insisting there was no ill intent behind his statements.

According to Kapoor, Chopra appeared hesitant about performing the intimate scene, which he said was understandable given their personal equation. He revealed that he had known her family for years and even addressed her as “beti” (daughter), making the situation uncomfortable for him as well. Sensing her discomfort, Kapoor claimed he himself suggested that the scene be reconsidered or removed altogether.

He further explained that the matter gained unnecessary traction when it was repeatedly brought up in interviews. At one point, while responding to persistent questioning, Kapoor made a remark suggesting that things might have been different if a more conventional “hero” had been cast opposite Chopra. That comment, he admitted, contributed to the controversy and was taken out of context, fuelling criticism against him.

Kapoor emphasised that he never felt offended by Chopra’s reluctance and respected her decision. He maintained that an actor’s comfort on set is crucial and should be prioritised, especially during intimate scenes. Over time, however, the narrative around the incident shifted, turning a private creative decision into a widely debated issue in the media.

The actor also reflected on how industry dynamics can change once an individual becomes a major star, noting that decisions and perceptions often evolve alongside fame. He reiterated that the episode was “blown out of proportion” and suggested that it may have been amplified for publicity.

Meanwhile, 7 Khoon Maaf remains a notable film in Chopra’s career, praised for its bold storytelling and her layered performance. Despite the lingering controversy, Kapoor’s latest remarks aim to close the chapter by offering a more nuanced perspective on what transpired behind the scenes, highlighting the importance of consent and mutual respect in filmmaking.
