May Day was truly eventful at the box office as three big movies—Raja Shivaji, Ek Din, and The Devil Wears Prada 2—released simultaneously. While Ek Din is receiving a lukewarm response, Raja Shivaji and the Hollywood sequel are in great demand. Considering the long weekend and the insane demand for both films, some theatre chains in Mumbai have reportedly added not just midnight screenings, but post-midnight shows as well.
Post-midnight shows for Raja Shivaji and DWP2
According to reports, select PVR cinemas have scheduled shows of The Devil Wears Prada 2 after 1 am. Meanwhile, a few Moviemax theatres have added post-midnight screenings of Raja Shivaji. The move points to the strong demand both films are generating.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, a source said, “There’s crazy demand for these two films. However, as there are too many releases, these films are facing capacity issues. Hence, exhibitors have decided to play shows after 12:00 am since the demand is there.”
About The Devil Wears Prada 2
The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives nearly two decades after the 2006 cult classic became one of the most beloved fashion films. The sequel brings back Meryl Streep as the formidable Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway returns as Andy Sachs, while Emily Blunt reprises her role as Emily Charlton. Stanley Tucci is also back as the ever-stylish Nigel.
Adding to the film’s advantage, its release coincided with Maharashtra Day, a public holiday in the state, which typically ensures higher footfall in cinemas. Early reviews for the film have been largely positive, further boosting its prospects.
About Raja Shivaji
On the other hand, Raja Shivaji, written and directed by Riteish Deshmukh, traces the early life of the Maratha warrior king, focusing on his vision of Swarajya and his courage. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Boman Irani, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Amol Gupte, and Genelia Deshmukh, among others. It also features a cameo by Salman Khan.
The film’s opening day was marred by an unexpected disruption in Thane. An early morning 8 am show at a local theatre was abruptly cancelled, leaving fans frustrated and sparking chaos at the venue.
