Peter Jackson addresses Ryan Gosling`s exit from The Lovely Bones

Filmmaker Peter Jackson has finally addressed actor Ryan Gosling`s much-discussed exit from the 2009 film `The Lovely Bones`, saying recasting an actor is ultimately the responsibility of the filmmakers, according to Variety.

Gosling was originally cast as the father of Saoirse Ronan`s character in the adaptation of `The Lovely Bones`. However, he was later replaced by Mark Wahlberg after gaining 60 pounds for the role without Jackson`s approval. Speaking during a conversation at Cannes after receiving an Honorary Palme d`Or, Jackson reflected on the casting change.

“I won`t talk about any particular examples of actors because it`s a personal, private thing and it`s not their fault,” Jackson said, as per the outlet. “Anytime we recast an actor, it`s actually our fault because we didn`t get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role. It`s not because they did anything wrong,” he added, according to Variety. The filmmaker further explained that casting decisions often come down to how an actor fits into the larger dynamic of a film. “Ryan is a fantastic actor, as we know,” Jackson said.

“Films are a chemistry both on camera and behind the camera. They`re chemistry in terms of what the actor conveys to the audience of the film.” “It`s just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character,” he continued. “Occasionally we make our own mistakes.”

In a 2010 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling had revealed that he and Jackson had different visions for the character. “We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really believed he should be 210 pounds,” Gosling had said. “We didn`t talk very much during the preproduction process, which was the problem,” he added.

The actor also joked about the aftermath of the decision, saying, “I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong. Then I was fat and unemployed.” Ronan also recalled the casting change during a 2024 appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, revealing that the cast had already started preparing for the film before Gosling`s departure. “I think I just loved Ryan and his dog, George, and I was just sad that he wasn`t gonna be around,” Ronan said.

However, she noted that the separation between the actor and filmmakers was understandable. “I think the reasons why they parted were totally valid,” she said. “Sometimes you`re just not on the same page.” Ronan also praised Wahlberg for stepping into the role, noting that his experience as a father may have helped shape the performance. “Mark was able to step in, and he was a father,” she said. “Ryan was like 27. He was young,” according to Variety.
