Mumbai ka dil sachme bahaut bada hai,” said Parwez Ali, as he broke down after seeing his mother safely come out of her surgery on Monday. “I truly thank each person who made whatever possible monetary contribution towards my mother’s treatment and will always pray for them and their families,” said the 12-year-old as he thanked mid-day for initiating the crowdfunding process two months ago in February.
Shabana, the mother of young Parwez Ali, has successfully undergone a critical surgery at Sion Hospital and is now on the road to recovery. The procedure, conducted on Monday, involved the disconnection of an internal fistula and reconstruction with an interposition flap. “This means that we have conducted the correction surgery for her rectum, bladder and vagina. We have removed all fistulas that had led to a change in the path for her stool and urine to pass,” said an additional associate professor, surgery department, Dr Vineet Kumar.
The surgery comes after a prolonged wait of over one-and-a-half months, during which multiple complications delayed treatment. “To begin with, we did not have any papers of the surgeries done earlier at another hospital. By the time we could figure out that she had been operated on for hysterectomy plus colostomy plus one operation of some fistula, which was again not clear, her condition deteriorated further. She suffered from severe internal infections and constant fever, which did not allow us to operate. Also, since operating on her meant involvement of a general surgeon, a colorectal surgeon (who pitched pro bono from outside), a plastic surgeon and a urologist, getting everyone on the same date was a task as we have OT day only on Mondays,” said Dr S Prabhakar, head of the surgery department.
The operation that lasted approximately seven hours. While she is now out of danger, doctors have indicated that another surgery will be required after a gap of at least six months to address her stoma.
