In a significant boost to Mumbai’s Metro expansion, three massive girders were successfully launched during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday between Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations as part of the ongoing work on Line-6.
Each girder had a span of 32 metres and weighed 110 metric tonnes (MT). The girders were launched at the Jogeshwari (JOS) section under a planned mega traffic and power block by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in close coordination with Western Railway.
A 10-hour block was carried out on the 6th line and shunting line, while a three-hour block was undertaken on the UP Through line and 5th line. The block was cleared 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled time, minimising inconvenience to suburban rail passengers.
The complex girder-launching exercise saw heavy deployment of equipment and manpower. MMRDA and Western Railway deployed one 600T crane, two 500T cranes, two standby 500T cranes, two Hydras, two JCBs, one material lifter, and two tower wagons.
A total of 110 personnel were engaged for the operation, including 40 railway staff and 70 contractor staff, ensuring round-the-clock safety and precision during the night work.
This successful launch marks another important milestone in the construction of the elevated sections of Metro Line-6, which runs parallel to the busy Western Railway corridor — one of the most challenging parts of the project due to limited space and continuous train movement.
Metro Line-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli via Lokhandwala), also known as the Pink Line, will comprise a 14.5-km fully elevated corridor with 13 stations. Once operational, it is expected to provide crucial east-west connectivity and significantly reduce travel time in Mumbai’s western suburbs.
Project snapshot
Length: 14.5 km (fully elevated)
Stations: 13
Depot: Kanjurmarg (15.2 hectares)
