Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed the erection of massive steel girders for a Foot overbridge (FOB) connecting Brahmand Junction to Tikuji Ni Wadi Metro Station in Thane, officials said.
According to MMRDA, the project was executed under challenging site conditions above the busy Ghodbunder Road, with a Metro viaduct located directly overhead.
Officials described the operation as a major engineering milestone achieved with high precision and coordination.
Four steel girders installed
MMRDA said four steel girders, each measuring 59.63 metres in length and weighing around 252 metric tonnes, were erected approximately 6.167 metres above Ghodbunder Road, one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s busiest traffic corridors.
Heavy machinery deployed for operation
The authority said the complex operation involved the use of two pullers with multi-axle carriers, two 250-metric-tonne cranes, one 800-metric-tonne crane and four supporting cranes of 15-metric-tonne capacity.
Officials added that a dedicated team of over 60 engineers, supervisors and allied staff worked on the project to ensure safe and efficient execution.
Project executed amid severe spatial constraints
According to MMRDA, the girder erection was completed despite severe space constraints at the site and was carried out with a focus on safety, precision and minimal disruption.
The authority said the project reflects its commitment towards developing world-class urban infrastructure and delivering complex engineering works across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
MMRDA removes over 1.14 lakh metres of metro barricades ahead of monsoon
The MMRDA has undertaken a large-scale barricade removal and monsoon preparedness exercise across several ongoing metro infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region ahead of the 2026 monsoon season.
According to MMRDA, more than 1.14 lakh metres of barricades have already been removed from completed stretches beneath metro viaducts across multiple corridors. The authority said the exercise is intended to restore road space, improve traffic movement and facilitate smoother stormwater flow before the onset of heavy rainfall.
The agency stated that the barricade removal drive has been prioritised in areas where viaduct construction, pier work and major structural activities have either been completed or reached advanced stages. The move is expected to improve carriageway width and reduce congestion on key arterial roads during the monsoon.
The review of the ongoing exercise was conducted under the leadership of MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee in the presence of Additional Commissioners Vikram Kumar and Ashwin Mudgal.
