Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday announced a comprehensive plan to develop Chondi village, the birthplace of Ahilyabai Holkar, into a major heritage and tourism destination, with a focus on infrastructure, conservation, and cultural promotion.
Rs 681-crore project to transform memorial site
Chairing a high-level review meeting, Fadnavis said the state has earmarked Rs 681 crore for the overall development of the memorial site in Chondi. The project aims to highlight the life and legacy of Ahilyabai Holkar while creating a modern tourism hub.
Planned components include a grand statue, landscaped gardens, riverfront development, a state-of-the-art museum, an open-air theatre, and a dedicated tourist facilitation centre.
Focus on tourism infrastructure and visitor experience
The chief minister emphasised the need to build high-quality infrastructure to attract visitors year-round. He directed officials to ensure proper planning that balances green spaces with open areas, while also enhancing the visual appeal of the site.
He noted that the project is designed not only as a memorial but also as a space to educate and inspire future generations about the contributions of Ahilyabai Holkar.
Water management and sustainability key priorities
Fadnavis highlighted the importance of sustainable water management at the site, stressing the need for year-round water availability. He instructed authorities to explore constructing a barrage as a more effective alternative to conventional check dams.
Officials were also asked to ensure that environmental considerations remain central to the development plan.
PPP model under consideration for long-term upkeep
The government is considering adopting a public-private partnership (PPP) model for certain components of the project. According to Fadnavis, this approach could improve efficiency, ensure better maintenance, and support long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.
Land acquisition for the project will be carried out using funds from the District Planning Committee, he added.
Road connectivity and surveys already underway
As part of the broader plan, two projects under a Rs 360-crore road development initiative have already received work orders from the Public Works Department. A joint survey involving multiple departments, including forest and irrigation authorities as well as the local gram panchayat, has been completed to finalise project boundaries.
Project aims to boost local economy
Ram Shinde said the initiative seeks to integrate history, culture, and tourism while also generating employment opportunities for local residents.
