A high-level delegation from Mauritius visited the Maharashtra NCC Directorate on Monday as part of a youth exchange initiative aimed at understanding India’s National Cadet Corps (NCC) framework and exploring avenues for collaboration in youth development.
Delegation engages with NCC leadership
The delegation, led by Dhanita Ramadharee, Permanent Secretary to the Government of Mauritius, included representatives from the country’s political leadership and police services. During their visit, they held detailed discussions with Additional Director General Major General Vivek Tyagi, focusing on the structure and functioning of the NCC.
Officials were given presentations and taken on field visits to gain first-hand insight into training modules, curriculum design and the cadet progression system that underpins the organisation’s operations.
Focus on adapting NCC model for Mauritius
Key discussions centred on whether the Indian NCC model could be adapted to suit Mauritius. Deliberations covered implementation strategies, cost considerations and risk management, along with the infrastructure and resource requirements needed to build a sustainable framework.
Indian authorities also shared inputs on phased development approaches and highlighted the importance of long-term planning in youth training programmes.
Scope for technical cooperation and exchanges
The visiting delegation explored potential areas of technical collaboration, including training support, exchange programmes and access to institutional expertise. Both sides indicated interest in developing structured cooperation that could strengthen youth engagement initiatives.
Exposure to NCC activities in Mumbai
As part of the visit, the delegation toured NCC units in Mumbai, where they observed naval cadets participating in a ship modelling exercise. They also visited an NCC unit at IIT Powai, where they were briefed on campus activities and training facilities.
Youth empowerment and future cooperation
Officials highlighted the role of the NCC in promoting youth empowerment and women’s participation, as well as its involvement in civil defence activities. The visit is expected to pave the way for a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two sides, aimed at strengthening cooperation in youth development.
The Mauritius delegation also underscored the growing need to involve young people in national priorities such as disaster management, maritime security and climate resilience, while expanding leadership opportunities for youth.
