​CSMT redevelopment: Central Railway extends block till June 13 

Central Railway has extended the ongoing Traffic and Power Block at Platforms 16 and 17 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) till June 13, 2026 as part of the station’s redevelopment project.

An official statement said that the redevelopment work is being carried out by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). Railway officials said the block is necessary to complete foundation work and other important infrastructure activities at the affected platforms.

The block had originally begun on February 1, 2026 and was initially scheduled to continue until April 26. It was later extended till May 19 and has now been further extended until June 13.

Several trains to continue short termination

Due to the ongoing work, several Mail and Express trains will continue to be short terminated at Dadar and Thane instead of reaching CSMT.

The following trains will terminate at Dadar railway station until journey commencing on June 13, 2026:

– Train No. 12112 Amravati – CSMT Express

– Train No. 11002 Ballarshah – CSMT Nandigram Express

– Train No. 12810 Howrah – CSMT Express

– Train No. 11020 Bhubaneswar – CSMT Konark Express

– Train No. 22144 Bidar – CSMT Express

– Train No. 22108 Latur – CSMT Express

– Train No. 22120 Madgaon – CSMT Tejas Express

The following train will terminate at Thane railway station:

– Train No. 12134 Mangaluru – CSMT Express

Railway appeals for passenger cooperation

Railway officials stated that the temporary changes are essential for the modernisation and infrastructure development of CSMT under the ongoing redevelopment project.

Passengers have been advised to check train schedules before travelling and make suitable travel arrangements in advance.

Mumbai AC local ridership sees sharp rise

Meanwhile, in an another statement, the Central Railway said that it has reported a major increase in the use of Mumbai AC local trains between January 26 and May 20, 2026, with around 1.50 crore passengers travelling on the service during the period.

According to railway data, the daily average number of passengers rose to 1.30 lakh in 2026 from 87,596 during the same period last year, marking an increase of 48.5 per cent.

The average occupancy per AC local service also increased from 1,474 passengers in 2025 to 1,664 passengers in 2026, despite the rise in the number of services. Central Railway operated 8,991 AC local services this year compared to 6,834 services during the same period in 2025.

Railway officials said the total revenue generated from Mumbai AC locals increased to Rs 64.40 crore in 2026, compared to Rs 44.27 crore last year. Daily average revenue also rose from Rs 38.50 lakh to Rs 56 lakh.

The growth comes after Central Railway expanded AC local operations across Mumbai’s suburban network. The number of AC services increased from 66 to 80 in May 2025, and later rose to 94 following the introduction of AC locals on the CSMT-Panvel route from 26 January 2026. With an additional 14 services introduced in May 2026, the total number of AC local services has now reached 108.

Railway officials said commuters have responded positively to the increased frequency and expansion of routes, with demand peaking during March and May.
