Console and couture at Cannes

Movies take centre-stage at the Cannes Film Festival, but this time, Indian DJ and producer Trapperx brought music to the prestigious gala. On May 22, he presented his set at fashion designer Ashna Vaswani’s showcase. “My work spans melodic techno, house, and trap music. I brought the best of it all to Cannes,” said Trapperx to mid-day.

Using khadi, hand embroidery, and Rajasthan-inspired detailing, Vaswani’s collection brought together Indian heritage craftsmanship and contemporary couture. The music producer complemented it with Nayaab, his song that blended traditional elements and contemporary electronic music. He shared, “I’m drawn to traditional Indian instruments, and ethnic, tribal, and ancient sounds. I love to take those organic sounds and find ways to blend them into genres like house and melodic techno.”

For Trapperx, having his music showcased at Cannes represents years of work. It’s a sign that persistence pays off. “Cannes is one of the biggest stages an artiste can ever reach with their music. We’ve worked so hard to get to this point. I hope this inspires upcoming producers and shows them that it doesn’t matter which city you’re from; if you have the talent and you’re willing to put in the work, you can make it all the way to Cannes.”
