Acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has added another major achievement to his celebrated career after receiving France’s prestigious Commandeur title, the highest rank of the Order of Arts and Letters. The honour was presented during the ongoing 79th Cannes Film Festival, where Park is also serving as the president of the competition jury, making him the first Korean filmmaker to hold the position.

The award recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the fields of arts and literature while also helping promote French culture internationally. The Commandeur distinction is the highest of the three-tier honour system established by the French Ministry of Culture. Park has now become only the fourth South Korean to receive the recognition, joining an exclusive list that includes conductor Chung Myung-whun and soprano Sumi Jo.

During the ceremony held in Cannes, Park spoke emotionally about the impact French cinema and philosophy have had on his artistic journey. The director shared that many of the influences shaping his filmmaking style came from France and said receiving the honour felt deeply meaningful. He also expressed gratitude that his own films may now be inspiring younger French filmmakers in return.

Known globally for visually striking and emotionally intense films, Park has long been regarded as one of the most influential voices in modern cinema. His filmography includes internationally acclaimed titles such as Oldboy, The Handmaiden, Decision to Leave and Thirst. His works are often praised for their bold storytelling, stylish visuals, and psychological depth.

Park has also shared a long relationship with the Cannes Film Festival over the years. He won the Grand Prix for Oldboy in 2004, the Jury Prize for Thirst in 2009, and Best Director for Decision to Leave in 2022. His appointment as Cannes jury president earlier this year was widely celebrated by film lovers around the world.
