A Chinese national accused of masterminding a massive cybercrime network targeting celebrities, executives, and wealthy individuals including BTS member Jungkook has been extradited from Thailand to South Korea. Authorities claim the hacking operation stole nearly 25 million USD worth of assets through identity theft and illegal access to financial accounts.
Jungkook mired in a cybercrime controversy
According to South Korea’s Ministry of Justice and the National Police Agency, the 40-year-old suspect arrived at Incheon International Airport from Bangkok earlier this week and was immediately taken into custody. Investigators allege he was one of the key leaders behind an international cybercrime syndicate operating mainly out of Thailand. The group reportedly hacked several websites and stole personal information from victims between August 2023 and April 2025.
Officials say the hackers used illegally obtained data to open mobile phone accounts, bypass identity verification systems, and gain access to victims’ banking and cryptocurrency accounts. Authorities estimate the group stole more than 38 billion won, or approximately 25.5 million USD, during the operation.
One of the most high-profile victims was Jungkook. Reports state the hackers attempted to transfer HYBE shares worth nearly 8.4 billion won from the singer’s securities account after allegedly stealing his identity. However, the transaction was quickly blocked after suspicious activity was detected, preventing any financial loss to the BTS star.
The extradition follows a major joint investigation involving South Korean authorities, Thai police, and Interpol. Another Chinese suspect connected to the same network had already been extradited in 2025 and is currently on trial in South Korea. Authorities also arrested multiple accomplices during coordinated raids in Thailand last year.
South Korea’s Justice Ministry stated that investigations into transnational cybercrime and online fraud will continue, with agencies working closely to track down additional suspects involved in the hacking network.
Former controversies of Jungkook
Jungkook has faced a few controversies during his career, though most were relatively minor. In 2019, he was involved in a car accident in Seoul after violating traffic rules, later settling with the taxi driver involved. He also drew criticism for visiting Itaewon during the COVID-19 pandemic alongside other K-pop idols. In 2023, some fans debated his explicit lyrics and mature concepts in solo tracks like Seven and 3D. Despite occasional backlash, Jungkook remains one of the most popular and commercially successful K-pop artists globally.
