Residents of Bandra West saw a man outside a private nail salon spray painting a tree in pink and green, on Friday evening.
Disturbed by the fact, they took the matter to X and also complained to the BMC as they feel the paint could hurt the tree.
Citizens speak
Ms Pereira, the resident who complained to the BMC about the issue, speaking to mid-day, said, “I saw a man painting the tree. I went up to him to enquire why he was doing so, and he didn’t give me a reply neither did he stop. Hence, I went into the salon to talk to them.”
He added, “After I went into and asked the staff about the painting, they said that it was being done for an event which was coming up, and that they had permissions for the same. It could harm the tree in many ways.”
When Sunday mid-day visited the area on Saturday, it was seen that the pink part of the tree was being repainted into a natural brown colour. The salon refused to give mid-day an official comment. A source said that the paint is being redone with natural paint, hence the salons owners feel that no harm would come to the tree itself.
BMC Speaks
Amol Vasaikar, Junior Trees Officer of Gardens Department, told mid-day, “The BMC has not given any such permissions to paint trees. We have taken notice of the issue on Saturday afternoon, and will be issuing a notice to the establishment on Monday for the painting.”
