Anti-women remarks row: Lukkhe`s Yograj Singh applies for anticipatory bail

Former cricketer and actor Yograj Singh has approached the court seeking anticipatory bail after an FIR was filed against him over alleged anti-women remarks in the web series Lukkhe. The case was registered at Chandigarh’s Sector 36 police station following complaints that certain dialogues from the series were offensive towards women and promoted misogynistic views.

Yograj Singh seeks Anticipatory bail

According to reports, the complaint was lodged by advocates Ujjwal Bhasin and Jatin Verma, who objected to a viral clip from the show in which Yograj’s character allegedly makes derogatory comments about women. The FIR reportedly invokes provisions related to insulting the modesty of women, while the Punjab State Women Commission has also taken suo motu cognisance of the controversy and sought a police investigation.

During the bail hearing, Yograj’s legal team reportedly argued that the controversial dialogue was part of a fictional web series and that the actor was merely performing a scripted role under contractual obligations. The court has now issued notices to the state government and sought a response by May 20.

Reacting to the FIR, Yograj’s younger son Victor Singh chose to remain cautious. Speaking briefly after news of the case surfaced, Victor said the family would refrain from commenting publicly at the moment because legal consultations were underway. He added that they were bound by contractual matters and would speak only after discussing the issue with their legal team.

All about the controversy

The controversy began after a 17-second clip from Lukkhe circulated widely online. In the scene, Yograj’s character allegedly remarks that a woman’s place is “at the stove during the day and for intimacy at night,” sparking outrage on social media and criticism from women’s rights groups. Reports suggest that the disputed dialogue has since been removed from the series.

This is not the first time Yograj Singh has found himself in controversy. In recent years, he made headlines over remarks involving former cricketers MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev, comments for which his son Yuvraj Singh had later publicly apologised.
