Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday paid tribute to internationally acclaimed photographer Raghu Rai, describing his death as a significant loss to Indian journalism and visual storytelling.
In a condolence message, Fadnavis said Rai was a remarkable figure who captured the depth of human emotions through his lens and chronicled India’s journey with rare sensitivity and insight.
Documenting India’s history and human stories
Fadnavis noted that Rai’s work went beyond photography, serving as a visual record of India’s social, cultural and developmental transformations. His images documented everyday life, as well as defining historical moments, with striking clarity.
The Chief Minister highlighted Rai’s coverage of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, stating that his photographs brought global attention to the suffering of victims and helped convey their pain to the world.
International recognition and distinguished career
Rai’s work received widespread international acclaim over several decades. He contributed to leading global publications such as Time Magazine, Life Magazine and The New York Times.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 and received numerous other honours both in India and abroad. His photographic series Human Management of Wildlife in India earned him the “Photographer of the Year” award in the United States, while he was also recognised by the French government for his contribution to photography.
Role in mentoring and global photography platforms
Apart from his work behind the camera, Rai contributed to the global photography community. He served as a jury member for World Press Photo and was associated with photography initiatives organised by UNESCO, helping mentor emerging talent.
A lasting visual legacy
Fadnavis said Rai’s photographs captured moments of truth, anguish and compassion—often conveying emotions that words could not express. He added that Rai’s work will remain an enduring visual archive of modern India.
The Chief Minister expressed his condolences and acknowledged Rai’s invaluable contribution to photojournalism, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
