Maharashtra makes Marathi training mandatory for drivers by August 15

In a major push to promote the Marathi language, the Maharashtra government has made it compulsory for all rickshaw and taxi drivers in the state to learn practical Marathi by August 15.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that rickshaw and taxi drivers, especially non-Marathi speakers, will have to complete practical Marathi language training — either online or at physical centres — by August 15. He warned that no further extension will be given after this deadline and strict legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

Speaking at a meeting held at the Mantralaya to discuss Marathi language training for drivers, Sarnaik said the Transport Department has taken the lead in promoting and spreading the Marathi language.

“Non-Maharashtrian rickshaw-taxi drivers must learn practical Marathi by August 15. After August 16, no extension will be granted,” the minister stated firmly.

He added that training centres will be set up across the state in collaboration with the Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad and Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh. These centres will also be operated at rickshaw unions and Shiv Sena shakhas.

The minister appealed to drivers to join online or nearby physical centres at the earliest. Around 4,000 teachers are expected to participate in this drive. Drivers will have to attend a minimum four-hour course on convenient Saturdays and Sundays every month.

Funding for the initiative

On the request of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for teachers’ remuneration. The remaining expenses will be borne by the Maharashtra Transport Department.

Successful trainees will be issued certificates by the Maharashtra Transport Department after an oral examination to assess their practical Marathi speaking skills.

Preparations underway

Simple, illustrated textbooks in easy language have been prepared.

Sub-centres will be established under main training centres.

Stickers promoting Marathi will be affixed on rickshaws, taxis, Ola, Uber, and Rapido vehicles.

Special banners are being designed for widespread awareness.

A meeting with rickshaw and taxi drivers has been scheduled for Tuesday, where they will be urged to take advantage of the free training and complete it before the deadline.
