Residents of Parel have raised serious concerns over relocation arrangements ahead of the imminent demolition of Haji Noorani building near Prabhadevi railway station, the final obstruction to the Sewri connector.
With the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) setting Friday, April 24, as the deadline to vacate, locals say the alternative accommodation is not ready for occupation.
Relocation concerns
Several families allotted homes in the D-Abero building claim that basic amenities are missing. “There is no functional lift, making it extremely difficult for elderly residents and families with children to shift. How do they expect us to move to the seventh floor without a working lift?” said Manish Shirodkar, who has been allotted flat no. 701.
Residents also pointed to problems inside the allotted flats. “There are large cracks in the walls, poor cleanliness, and incomplete finishing work,” said Poornima Gurav, who has been allotted flat no. 702.
Pending access
Some residents are yet to receive keys to their new homes. “I will be making the payment tomorrow, Friday, after which I will get the keys. There is no way I can shift by Friday or even before April 27,” said Ravindra Jadhav, allotted flat no. 602.
Residents have urged authorities to either extend the deadline or ensure the alternative housing is fully livable before eviction. “The building also does not have a water connection yet. Bore water is being provided in the washroom,” Shirodkar added.
Authorities speak
“We have informed MHADA to ensure all facilities are provided at the earliest. We will look into the matter and resolve the issues. But we also have a deadline,” said Shivaji Davbhat, additional collector.
