In a bid to tackle rising drug abuse and overdose cases in Mumbai, the administration will roll out a year-long anti-drug campaign titled “Mumbai Against Drugs” starting May 1, 2026.
As per the official statement, the decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, along with BJP MLA Ameet Satam and senior officials from the administration, police, and various organisations in attendance.
Announcing the initiative, Satam highlighted that the campaign will run for 12 months and aims to transform the fight against drug abuse into a mass movement.
“It was decided that a campaign titled ‘Mumbai Against Drugs’ will be launched on 1st May 2026. This campaign will run for 12 months (365 days),” said the BJP MLA Satam.
CM Fadnavis to oversee `Mumbai against drugs` campaign
The official statement released after the meeting further highlighted that the campaign against drug abuse will be conducted under the guidance of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and will focus on creating awareness, particularly among the youth, through sustained outreach and community engagement.
Furthermore, the authorities have also planned to involve a wide range of stakeholders, including schools, colleges, universities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), religious institutions, resident welfare associations, corporates, and parent-teacher bodies to make sure that the initiative becomes a success.
Raising concerns over the NESCO drug haul that killed two youth, BJP MLA Ameet Satam also asserted, “The recent deaths caused by drug overdose are a serious warning that this issue cannot be resolved through police action alone. In this context, under the guidance of Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, a comprehensive anti-drug mass movement is being launched by bringing together all sections of society. Through this initiative, we can build an effective fight against drug abuse.”
Celebrities to be a part of the “Mumbai against drugs” campaign
Furthermore, the officials also asserted that various celebrities and prominent personalities are expected to participate to amplify the message against ‘drug abuse’.
Activities will be held across educational institutions and public spaces to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage community participation in prevention efforts.
Officials said the initiative seeks to build a coordinated response involving citizens and institutions, with the larger goal of curbing drug consumption and safeguarding young people across Mumbai.
