A Level-I fire broke out early Sunday morning at Umarikar Building on L.T. Marg near Crawford Market in South Mumbai, prompting a swift response from multiple civic agencies. The incident was reported at around 6.20 am to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s fire control room.
According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the blaze was confined to four to five shops located on the ground floor of the building. Thick smoke had spread across approximately the same number of adjoining shops, raising concerns among nearby occupants and traders in the busy commercial area.
The fire brigade declared it a Level-I fire call at 6.27 am and immediately deployed firefighting personnel and equipment to the spot. Along with the MFB, personnel from the Mumbai Police, BEST staff, and local BMC ward officials were mobilised to assist in managing the situation and ensuring public safety.
Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the situation under control. The blaze was successfully extinguished by around 10.30 am, officials confirmed.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Fire damages 10 shops in Mumbai Central; no casualty
In another incident, a fire broke out at a commercial structure in Mumbai, damaging around 10 shops, officials said on Sunday.
There were no casualties in the blaze, which was reported at 11.31 pm on Saturday on D B Marg opposite a mall in the Mumbai Central area, they said.
The fire was confined to electric wiringb, installations and equipment in around five large and seven small shops spread over nearly 5,000 sq ft on the ground and first floors of the structure, a civic official said.
Firefighters doused the blaze by 3.50 am on Sunday, the official said.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
Fire breaks out at scrap godown in Thane district
Meanwhile, a fire broke out at a scrap godown in Maharashtra`s Thane district in the early hours of Sunday, destroying machinery and large stocks of cardboard, a civic official said.
No casualties were reported in the blaze that erupted around 6.40 am at the godown in Shamim Compound on the Shilphata-Mahape Road in Diva, the official said.
The blaze destroyed a hydraulic paper baling press, a huge stock of scrap cardboard materials stored in the godown and electrical wiring, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the civic disaster management cell.
He said that the fire department officers and personnel arrived at the spot with two high-rise fire vehicles, a rescue vehicle, and a jeep.
The blaze was brought under control after five hours of efforts, and no one was injured at the scene, he said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, the official added.
