For children looking to learn a new skill this summer, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) might be the place to be. Starting May 23, the gallery will host a five-day animation workshop mentored by educator Tehzeeb Khurana to teach them techniques such as matchstick animation, pixilation, hand-drawn animation, and cut-out animation.

Organised by BMC and UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in association with Neelaya Collective, the initiative — a part of the broader celebration of ‘Mumbai- A UNESCO City of Film’ — will also offer children a chance to enjoy screenings of Shilpa Ranade’s National Award-winning film, Goopy Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya, and Bhimsain’s Ek Chidiya Anek Chidiya. “The workshop is designed to combine hands-on learning with an understanding of animation’s history, fundamentals and contemporary relevance,” shared Khurana.

It has been three years since Juhu Reads started conducting group reading sessions at Kaifi Azmi Park. The community which started on May 20, 2023 is celebrating its third anniversary this Saturday by conducting a special book giveaway to the first 25 readers who show up.

“Friendships become stronger when people come together and read. In the last three years, so many friendships have been forged at these gatherings. There are so many readers who have come for every single session.” Diya Sengupta, co-curator of Juhu Reads revealed as she looked back at the community’s journey. The celebration will also be marked by attendees reciting original poetry and writing letters to Juhu Reads as an ode to their time spent with the community.

“We will be gathering together at a meet-up on the last match of the season this Sunday. Rest assured, we will be singing the chants, and sharing stories,” revealed Kartik Menda, team member, Arsenal Mumbai. The celebration will have an added edge since the team’s city rivals, Tottenham, are fighting against relegation. “That just makes things sweeter,” Menda admitted. With cult-favourite movies like Ponyo, Spirited Away, and Ocean Waves on the list, the screenings wish to pay homage to the movies that shaped an entire generation’s emotional landscape. “As children, they feel magical, and as adults, they become deeply emotional films.” Palukdar added.
