The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has initiated the first phase of a renewable energy transition, with the state government approving a 2.57 MW grid-connected solar power project to be installed across its facilities. The move is aimed at reducing electricity costs while advancing environmentally sustainable operations within the public transport utility.
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the project will see solar panels installed on the rooftops of bus stations, depots, workshops and administrative offices across Maharashtra. The initiative has received both administrative and financial clearance, with an estimated outlay of Rs 13.03 crore.
Rooftop Solar to Power Key Facilities
Officials said the project is designed to harness unused rooftop spaces across MSRTC’s statewide infrastructure network. Once operational, the solar installations will supply a portion of the corporation’s daily power requirements, reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
The rollout forms part of a broader push to integrate renewable energy solutions into government-run services. By leveraging grid-connected systems, the corporation will be able to utilise solar power efficiently while maintaining a stable electricity supply.
Significant Cost Savings Expected
According to Sarnaik, the adoption of solar energy is expected to generate substantial financial benefits for MSRTC. The corporation is projected to save between Rs 3 crore and Rs 4 crore annually on electricity expenses once the systems become fully operational.
“These savings will contribute to improving the financial discipline of the undertaking while ensuring long-term sustainability,” the minister noted.
Compliance and Implementation Framework
The transport department has emphasised that the project will be implemented in strict accordance with prescribed technical standards and environmental regulations. Authorities will ensure that all installations adhere to approved designs and safety norms.
Monitoring mechanisms are also expected to be put in place to oversee execution and performance, ensuring that the project delivers the anticipated efficiency gains.
Step Towards Green Public Transport
The initiative marks a significant step in aligning Maharashtra’s public transport infrastructure with clean energy goals. By adopting solar power, MSRTC aims not only to cut operational costs but also to reduce its carbon footprint.
