In yet another human-wildlife conflict, an eight-year-old boy lost his life after a leopard attacked the minor in a forested area near Kalbhonda village under the Dolkhamb range, close to Kasara in Thane district. 

The unfortunate incident happened on Tuesday morning, which alerted the authorities. According to the Forest Department, the deceased has been identified as Krishna Agivale. The victim had ventured into a forest patch within Survey No. 86 around 10:30 am on Tuesday to collect mangoes along with a family member when the attack occurred. 

The officials also added that the incident has left the local community in shock and raised fresh concerns over increasing leopard movement in the region.

Soon after receiving the information, forest officials, including Range Forest Officer Ajay Chavan and field staff, rushed to the site. Personnel from Kasara police station also reached the spot and carried out a preliminary inquiry. Acting on the incident, the officials surrounded the forest area to trace the animal and assess the situation.

Forest Department initiates precautionary measures 

The Forest Department also initiated precautionary measures to prevent further incidents. Eight camera traps have been installed in the vicinity to monitor leopard movement, while two cages have been set up to capture the animal if necessary. Officials from the forest department said that patrolling has been intensified in the affected areas.

Authorities have also begun awareness drives, urging villagers to avoid entering forested zones, especially during early morning and evening hours, when leopard activity is typically higher.

Maharashtra Forest Department announces Rs 2 lakh assistance

Following the incident, the Maharashtra Forest Department has provided immediate financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the victim’s family. Officials further reiterated the need for vigilance among residents, as human-leopard encounters continue to pose a serious risk in parts of the Thane district adjoining forest areas.
