Jasmine Sandlas recalls father pumping gas in US after leaving high-profile job

Singer Jasmine Sandlas recently opened up about her family’s difficult journey after moving from India to the United States, sharing an emotional account of her father’s sacrifices and the struggles they faced in their early years abroad.

Jasmine Sandlas talks about facing poverty in the US

In a candid conversation, the Dhurandhar singer recalled how her family’s life changed drastically after migration. Despite her father holding a prestigious position in India, he had to start from scratch in the US to support his family. “When we used to live in India, my father had a high-profile job… he was a law school valedictorian,” she said, highlighting his academic and professional achievements before the move.

However, survival took priority over status once they relocated. Sandlas revealed that her father had to take up manual labour, working at a gas station. “His first job was at a gas station, pumping gas… he sacrificed his entire life,” she shared, emphasising how he let go of comfort and recognition for his children’s future.

The transition wasn’t easy for the family. Sandlas described their living conditions as modest and challenging. “We used to live in a one-bedroom apartment… we were six people,” she recalled, adding that they relied on food stamps to get basic groceries. The experience left a lasting impression on her, especially as she struggled to adapt to a new country without knowing English at the time.

She also spoke about her mother’s contribution, revealing that both parents worked tirelessly to make ends meet. “My mom also worked… like a majdoor level work,” she said, underlining the physical and emotional hardships they endured.

Details on the difficulties she endured

Despite the difficulties, her father eventually rebuilt his career. After years of struggle, he became a legal interpreter, translating Punjabi to English in court a role that offered better financial stability. Sandlas herself followed in his footsteps for a brief period, working as an interpreter as well.

Reflecting on the journey, Sandlas made it clear that her parents’ sacrifices played a crucial role in shaping her life and career. Their resilience and determination not only helped the family survive tough times but also laid the foundation for her eventual success in the music industry.

Today, as she enjoys professional highs, Sandlas’ story serves as a powerful reminder of the immigrant experience where dreams often come at the cost of immense personal sacrifice, and success is built on years of unseen struggle and perseverance.
