Mumbai’s long-delayed suburban rail expansion gains pace with new lines

After nearly 18 years of delays, work on new suburban railway lines in Mumbai is finally moving ahead. The Central Railway is extending its 5th and 6th lines up to Parel, while the Western Railway is progressing on its 6th line up to Mumbai Central.

The projects had been stalled for years due to land acquisition issues, rehabilitation challenges and the complexity of working in one of the busiest rail networks in the world. Officials say key hurdles, including land issues at Kurla, have now been resolved, allowing construction to speed up. “75 per cent of the project-affected people have been shifted, and the work is progressing smoothly,” said Central Railway (CR) Chief Public Relations Officer Dr Swapnil Nila.

Once completed, these additional lines will help separate suburban and long-distance trains, improving efficiency and reducing congestion on Mumbai’s rail network.
