BMC to live telecast General Body proceedings for the first time

Mumbaikars can now track what their elected representatives in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMCs) General Body meeting, with BMC conducting live telecasts of its sessions on social media platforms.

This comes at a time when BMC has an elected representatives’ body for the first time after three years and 10 months. General Body proceedings will be live telecast for the first time in the civic body’s history.

Proceedings will be available on the civic body’s YouTube channel, making BMC the first civic body in the country to live telecast proceedings of the General Body, akin to procedures of the Lok Sabha and all Vidhan Sabhas across the country.

Work on trial basis

The first trial of this process was held on April 9, 2026. Subsequently, another General Body meeting was conducted that did not get a live telecast. However, on Monday, the BMC live telecast its General Body meeting on YouTube.

Official Speak

A senior BMC official
‘We are still running this on a trial basis. Once details are finalised, every General Body meeting will be telecast live. This is a bid to increase transparency and give Mumbaikars a chance to view their elected representatives raise their issues in real time.’

Background

The update was announced by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde after the General Body meeting held on April 16, where the opposition demanded that the Leader of Opposition Kishori Pednekar be suspended for her remarks about Bal Thackeray on the floor of the House. Pednekar walked out of the meeting, and returned refusing to apologise for the issue. Corporators from the Opposition have been raising issues about low funds given to wards belonging to the Opposition.
