Mumbai’s birding season for migrant birds is drawing to a close but a growing number of urban residents continue to turn towards guided experiences by experts like Naturalist Explorers to reconnect with nature and make the most of this period. To be held at Maharashtra Nature Park, the Birds for Beginners session is designed for first-time birdwatchers, offering a hands-on introduction to observing and understanding birds beyond simple identification.

“Birds for Beginners is specially curated for people who are new to birdwatching or don’t know how to pursue it further,” says Priyal B Soni, chief event curator. “We try to show them how to meaningfully observe birds — by looking at features like the beak or feet to understand what they eat or where they live.”

The morning trail focuses on building basic field skills such as using sound, spotting subtle movements, and maintaining silence. Participants also learn to interpret bird behaviour, from feeding patterns to courtship rituals.

“Most people identify a bird, and move on. We try to bring more meaning to what they are seeing — what the bird is doing at that moment,” Soni explains. With the migratory season ending, the walks now spotlight resident species, making it an ideal introduction to Mumbai’s everyday biodiversity.
