In a city crowded with paint-and-sip sessions and weekend art classes, Vagabond Experiences is attempting to make creativity more personal with Face to Trace, a self-portrait painting workshop that swaps traditional canvases for tote bags. Designed for beginners and non-artists alike, the session allows participants to paint illustrated versions of themselves on wearable keepsakes.

Elton Dmello co-founder and CEO, Vagabond Experiences, says the concept emerged after months of experimentation. “Self-portraits as an art form are challenging enough for seasoned artists. We wanted to design something truly accessible, artist or not,” he explains. Before the workshop, participants submit a photograph of themselves along with three elements that represent their personality — ranging from favourite flowers and foods to symbols inspired by nature. Illustrator Danette Gomes then creates a custom line drawing, which attendees trace and paint onto their tote bags during the session. “Tote bags today have become a medium to express one’s personality. From memes and quotes to funky designs, the tote bag is the modern-day canvas,” says Dmello.

The guided workshop encourages participants to embrace imperfection and experiment freely. “Many participants, who don’t consider themselves artistic, leave with something they are genuinely proud of. It reaffirms that art is for everyone,” he adds.
