In a statement on Instagram, translated from the original Portuguese, the “Todo Mundo No Rio” concert shared, “The event organizers confirm that an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26) tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show.”

The statement continued, “First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital.”

“At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim`s family,” it concluded.

The state fire brigade (CBMERJ) confirmed to PEOPLE, “A worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system. Before the arrival of emergency teams, the victim had already been removed from the equipment by other employees present.”

A witness from the venue told news agency AFP that “out of nowhere, [he] saw people running. And when we looked, the structure was on the ground.” He added, per France24, that “a man had gotten trapped underneath,” and people were rushing to “pull him out.”

However, Shakira has not yet reacted to the incident, and an official statement on the update of the concert is awaited.

More about Shakira

Last month, Shakira set a record for the largest concert ever in Mexico City. The singer performed to more than 400,000 people at Mexico City’s Zócalo over the weekend.

As per ‘Female First UK’, the record-setting show adds even more momentum to Shakira’s upcoming return to Rio de Janeiro, where she’ll headline the free Todo Mundo No Rio concert at Copacabana Beach on May 2. The performance is part of her ongoing global run, which continues into 2026 and spans her full catalogue of hits.

Her latest achievements follow a major accolade from Billboard, which recently confirmed her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour as the highest-grossing Hispanic tour in history. Capping off a landmark year, Shakira has also been named a 2026 nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, further cementing her status as one of the most influential artists of her generation.
