Sena MLA threatens publisher over Shivaji Maharaj book, Cong slams `hooliganism`

A fresh political controversy erupted in Maharashtra after Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad allegedly threatened a publisher over a book on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, claiming it disrespects the iconic Maratha ruler. The opposition Congress condemned the remarks as “open hooliganism” and demanded immediate action, reported PTI.

MLA objects to book, issues warning to publisher

The controversy centres around a biography authored decades ago by late communist leader Govind Pansare. The book, first published in 1988 by Lokvangmay Gruha, has been republished multiple times over the years.

Gaikwad, an MLA from Buldhana, alleged that the book distorts historical facts and portrays Shivaji Maharaj in a disrespectful manner. In an audio clip that surfaced online, he is purportedly heard using abusive language against publisher Prashant Ambi and demanding that such material should not be circulated, reported PTI.

While Gaikwad admitted that the voice in the viral clip was his, he claimed that parts of the audio had been altered.

Claims of historical distortion fuel controversy

According to Gaikwad, he came across the book after it was brought home recently, and upon reading it, he found certain references objectionable. He maintained that the legacy and achievements of Shivaji Maharaj had been misrepresented, reported PTI.

The book in question is a short biography that has remained in circulation for decades and has been widely read in academic and public circles.

Congress demands inquiry, alleges misconduct

Reacting sharply, Congress spokesperson Harshwardhan Sapkal criticised Gaikwad’s conduct, stating that his language and behaviour were unbecoming of a public representative. He accused the MLA of repeatedly engaging in controversial acts that bring disrepute to public office, reported PTI.

Sapkal also alleged that Gaikwad’s remarks included references to the fate of Govind Pansare, who was killed in 2015, and termed it a serious and alarming statement. He urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to order an inquiry into the matter and ensure protection for the publisher.

Past controversies resurface

Gaikwad has been at the centre of multiple controversies in recent years. In 2024, he drew attention after claiming to possess a tiger tooth linked to a hunt in the 1980s. In another incident, he was accused of physically assaulting a staff member at a government facility over food quality, reported PTI.

Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil also weighed in, advising Gaikwad to avoid revisiting or creating controversies, reported PTI.

Political tensions rise over cultural legacy

The issue has once again highlighted the sensitivity surrounding historical figures like Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra’s political discourse. While Gaikwad defended his stance as a matter of protecting historical respect, opposition leaders argued that threats and abusive language undermine democratic values.

With demands for an inquiry growing louder, the controversy is likely to intensify in the coming days, adding to the already charged political atmosphere in the state.
