The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Thursday announced a daily 10 per cent water cut in areas receiving water supply from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), citing low water levels in reservoirs supplying Mumbai.
According to the civic body, BMC has implemented a 10 per cent water cut from May 15 due to the significantly depleted water stock in reservoirs supplying drinking water. The Mumbai civic body has directed TMC to effectively implement the cut in all areas within Thane city receiving BMC water supply.
The water cut will remain in force until further orders, the civic body said, urging citizens to use water sparingly and cooperate with the administration.
The affected areas fall under multiple ward committee jurisdictions in Thane, including Naupada-Kopri, Lokmanya Savarkar Nagar, Wagle Estate, and Majiwada-Manpada.
Naupada-Kopri Ward Committee: Hazuri, Louiswadi, Namdevwadi, Anand Nagar, Gaodevi water tank area, Tembhi Bungalow water tank area, Kopri Dhobighat, Kanhaiya Nagar water tank area, Kopri, Naupada, and Pachpakhadi.
Lokmanya Savarkar Nagar Ward Committee: The affected localities include Sainath Nagar, Ramchandra Nagar, Jijamata Nagar, Dnyaneshwar Nagar, Karvalo Nagar, and Indiranagar.
Wagle Ward Committee: Kisan Nagar 1 and 2, Shivaji Nagar, Padwal Nagar, Bhatwadi, and Ambika Nagar.
Majiwada-Manpada Ward Committee: The affected areas are Balkum Pada 1 and 2, Laxmi Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Gandhinagar.
TMC said citizens would be advised on judicious use of water and various water conservation measures to ensure planned water distribution.
The civic body added that the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure that available water stock in reservoirs lasts longer. The move also follows directives issued by the Maharashtra government in view of forecasts by the India Meteorological Department regarding El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions this year.
Mumbai water cut: BMC forms `zone-wise micro-planning` teams to minimise disruptions
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed engineers to undertake meticulous ward-wise and zone-wise micro-planning to minimise disruption during the ongoing 10 per cent water cut imposed across the city from Friday.
In a meeting held at the civic headquarters last week, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar directed deputy and assistant engineers of the water engineering department to ensure regular water supply with adequate pressure despite the reduction in supply.
The civic body said the 10 per cent water cut has been introduced as a precautionary measure due to a significant drop in water stock levels in reservoirs supplying Mumbai. The move aims to conserve the available water stock and ensure supply for a longer duration ahead of the monsoon.
