To ease congestion, police introduce odd-even parking on key eastern suburbs

In a bid to ease traffic congestion and ensure smooth movement of emergency vehicles, the Mumbai Traffic Police have imposed odd-even parking restrictions on multiple roads across the eastern suburbs. The restrictions came into effect on Tuesday, May 19, and will remain in force till August 18.

The orders were issued on Monday, May 18, under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Reason for the restrictions

According to the notifications, several roads in Mulund, Chembur, Chunabhatti, Trombay, Mankhurd, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, and Ghatkopar are narrow. Double-sided parking on these roads has been causing severe traffic jams and obstructing the movement of emergency and essential service vehicles. To reduce congestion, the police have introduced odd-even parking rules on these stretches.

Odd-even parking rule

Under the new system, parking will be permitted only on one side of the road depending on the date:

On even dates, vehicles can be parked on the north side of the road.

On odd dates, vehicles must be parked on the south side of the road.

The restrictions apply to the specific stretches mentioned in the official orders.
