In an era where the film industry continues to adapt to evolving economic realities, veteran actor, filmmaker, and cinema icon Kamal Haasan has once again demonstrated why he remains one of Indian cinema’s most respected figures. As the country faces economic crisis caused by the West Asia conflict, Haasan set example by ditching a charter plane journey for an economy class travel.
Kamal Haasan flies economy
Recently spotted travelling on a commercial economy flight en route to a shoot, Haasan chose practicality and purpose over private charters and luxury travel, a quiet yet powerful gesture that has struck a chord across the industry and with audiences alike.
The sentiment was further amplified when Vyjayanthi Movies shared a post on its official social media page, acknowledging the actor’s thoughtful choice at a time when cinema continues to navigate challenging realities.

In the accompanying caption, the production house wrote that Haasan “choosing to let go of private charters and luxury travel to take an economy flight and head straight to the shoot sets says everything about the legend he is,” adding that it marked “a first step towards greater things to happen in cinema.” The actor is currently shooting for the film Kalki 2898 AD sequel which is backed by Vyjayanthi Movies.
This comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked citizens to adopt sustainable lifestyle as the country in undergoing an economic crisis. In line with that, Modi also asked citizens to opt for public transport over private vehicles to save fuel. He also urged people to adopt work from home as was the norm during COVID-19 pandemic.
Kamal Haasan appeals industry to focus on cost-cutting
Recently, in a detailed social media note, the actor expressed concern over rising fuel, logistics, and production costs, warning that the burden would eventually impact producers, workers, distributors, theatres, and the entire cinema ecosystem.
Kamal pointed out that the industry is already grappling with escalating budgets and uneven post-pandemic recovery, while inflation could further affect audience spending on entertainment. Stressing that workers should not bear the consequences of financial corrections, he said wages, safety, accommodation, transport, and humane working conditions must remain protected.
The actor also criticised unnecessary luxury spending, inflated entourage culture, excessive foreign shoots, and poor production planning. Questioning the industry’s obsession with overseas locations, he wrote, “Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon end in Switzerland?”
Calling for sustainable filmmaking, Kamal urged the industry to adopt smarter budgeting, tighter schedules, reduced extravagance, and energy conservation.
