At the 2025 Emmy Awards, several stars bagged the prestigious honours, adding feathers to their caps. Among them were stars John Oliver and Hannah Einbinder. However, these two not only took home awards but also made headlines after parts of their speeches were censored during the live broadcast. Both stars were bleeped out twice during their respective acceptance speeches.
John Oliver`s speech bleeped out
John Oliver took home the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series for Last Week Tonight. With that he continued his long-standing success at the awards. However, it wasn`t just his win that grabbed eyeballs. Oliver`s acceptance speech was muted twice during the live telecast.
Although the broadcast silenced parts of his speech, viewers quickly filled in the gaps on social media. According to one X (formerly Twitter) user, Oliver humorously took a jibe at fellow comedian Nate Bargatze, who was also attending and hosting the event. “F*ck you Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you – and you can add a f*ck to the swear jar as well,” John said.
Hannah Einbinder`s speech censored
On the other hand, Hannah Einbinder won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. She too had part of her acceptance speech muted. Towards the end of her speech, Hannah gave a shout-out to her NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. All was good till then, until she made a bold political statement at the end that was censored during the live broadcast.
The actress reportedly opened her speech by joking about her past Emmy losses, quipping, “I was just really committed to the personal narrative that I had that it was actually cooler to continue to lose. But this is cool too! This is also punk rock.” She then went on to thank the creators of Hacks, Jen Statsky, Paul W Downs, and Lucia Aniello, for supporting her both professionally and personally. Hannah also praised her co-star Jean Smart, calling her “like a sun,” and added, “I just get to stand in her warmth.”
Einbinder ended her speech with, “”Go Birds, f*** ICE, and free Palestine,” before the broadcast cut the audio.
