NMMC showcases water management model at ‘Envirotech Asia 2026’

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) showcased its innovative approach to sustainable urban water management at the Envirotech Asia 2026 Conference, held at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre in Navi Mumbai, officials said.

The conference, focused on environmental protection, sustainable development, and the use of advanced technologies, witnessed participation from senior officials of the Central and State governments, representatives from municipal corporations and urban local bodies, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), NEERI, industry leaders, researchers, consultants, and policy makers.

Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde and Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, NMMC’s Deputy Engineer Swapnil Desai presented an in-depth paper titled “Wastewater as a Future Water Source: Advancing Treatment Technologies and Tackling Emerging Contaminants,” the officials said.

Policy-level interventions

Desai highlighted the growing stress on freshwater resources due to rapid urbanisation and increasing water scarcity.

He emphasised the potential of treated waste water as a sustainable and alternative water source for the future.

The presentation covered advanced sewage treatment technologies, tertiary and advanced treatment processes, and the challenges posed by emerging contaminants.

He also outlined practical measures and policy-level interventions that municipal bodies can adopt to strengthen water resilience.

Eco-friendly industrial development

The conference was inaugurated by P. Anbalagan, Principal Secretary of the Industries Department, who stressed the need for eco-friendly industrial development, adoption of clean technologies, and stronger coordination between the government, industry, and urban local bodies.

NMMC’s participation and presentation at an international-level platform such as Envirotech Asia 2026 is being seen as a significant recognition of the city’s proactive water management initiatives and its commitment to sustainable development, officials said.
