Mumbai: BMC demolishes illegal shops in Goregaon to clear encroachments

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday carried out a demolition drive against 13 unauthorised shops in Goregaon (West), removing illegal structures that were obstructing pedestrian movement along key roads in the area.

The action was undertaken by the civic body’s P South ward on March 10 as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorised constructions and encroachments.

Demolition on SV Road and 5D Road

During the operation, officials demolished three unauthorised shops on Swami Vivekanand Road and removed the illegal extended portions of 10 shops on 5D Road in Goregaon (West).

Civic officials said the structures had encroached on public space and were hindering pedestrian movement along the busy stretch. In addition to the shop structures, action was also taken against unauthorised hawkers operating in the vicinity.

Joint action by civic departments

The drive was carried out under the guidance of Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 4) Bhagyashree Kapse and led by Assistant Commissioner of P South ward Aniruddha Kulkarni.

Officials from the Maintenance, Encroachment Removal and Licensing departments jointly conducted the operation after identifying the unauthorised constructions along the roads.

Machinery and police security deployed

A team of five officers and 25 staff members from the concerned departments participated in the demolition drive.

Authorities deployed one JCB, one truck, one goods vehicle and gas cutters to remove the illegal structures. Adequate police protection was provided by the Bangur Nagar Police Station to ensure the operation was carried out smoothly.

Action against encroachments to continue

The civic administration said that regular action will continue against unauthorised constructions and illegal hawkers in the area as part of efforts to keep public roads and footpaths free from encroachments.

BMC demolishes 61 illegal structures in Mulund

Earlier, in February, the BMC demolished 61 illegal structures along Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road in Mulund West, clearing nearly 1,100 square metres of encroached land near the railway station area.

Four JCB machines, seven dumpers and other equipment were deployed to carry out the demolition. Around 70 civic officials and staff members, along with adequate police personnel, were present to maintain law and order during the exercise.
