Maharashtra reports 86 Covid-19 cases; health department says no cause for alarm

The Public Health Department of Maharashtra has reported a slight uptick in the Covid-19 cases, though officials claimed that the situation remains under control and there is no cause for public alarm.

On Saturday, the state clocked 86 new Covid-19 cases, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reporting 31 patients.

The district-wise breakdown is as follows:

  • Pune Municipal Corporation: 31
  • Mumbai: 28
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC): 7
  • Thane Municipal Corporation: 6
  • Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation: 4
  • Nagpur Municipal Corporation: 3
  • Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation: 2
  • Pune: 2
  • Satara: 1
  • Kolhapur Municipal Corporation: 1
  • Sangli: 1

According to the latest update from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), since January 1, the state has conducted 16,226 Covid-19 tests, of which 1,362 have come back positive. While 749 patients have recovered from the virus, there are 595 active cases across Maharashtra.

The capital city of Mumbai has seen 640 Covid-19 cases since January, with the majority—634 cases—being reported in May.

However, state health officials have reassured that all the patients are experiencing only mild symptoms.

Since January, the state has recorded 18 Covid-related fatalities. Of these, 17 patients had existing comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, stroke, kidney disease, or respiratory illnesses. One individual—a 47-year-old woman—succumbed to the virus despite no known pre-existing conditions, presenting symptoms of fever and shortness of breath.

The health department said that Covid 19 testing and treatment facilities remain fully operational and accessible to the public through government-run health centres.

The state health department has further noted that a sporadic rise in Covid-19 cases is not limited to Maharashtra, with similar trends observed in other parts of India and abroad. Nevertheless, authorities are urging the public to remain calm, assuring that robust surveillance and healthcare systems are in place to manage the situation effectively.

Earlier this week, in view of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in India, the Union Health Ministry said that it has asked states to ensure the availability of oxygen supplies, isolation beds, ventilators, essential medicines and hold preparedness drills.

An official statement said, “The states have been asked to ensure the availability of oxygen supplies, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. A nationwide drill to check oxygen systems like PSA plants and LMO tanks was held on June 2. More facility-level preparedness drills are planned for June 4 and June 5.”
