Kyunki 2: Ekta Kapoor on the purpose behind the child safety and consent track

Over the years, Star Plus has created stories filled with emotion and meaningful drama. One of its most iconic shows, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, went beyond being just a family serial. It became a show that included real-life issues and important social topics in a relatable way, helping start conversations through characters the audience truly connected with.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi addresses consent

In the current track, Tulsi’s (Smriti Irani) conversation with Pari’s daughter, Garima, following her kidnapping, is handled with rare sensitivity. Instead of moving past the trauma, the show shows how Tulsi gently explains to Garima the difference between good touch and bad touch, while reassuring the child that speaking up is not just allowed, but necessary. The moment is quiet, but powerful. It shifts the narrative from shock to awareness, from fear to empowerment.

The track has since sparked conversations beyond television screens, reminding viewers that meaningful storytelling can influence real change. By choosing courage over comfort, the makers have reinforced how such issues, when handled with care and intent, can become a catalyst for awareness, dialogue, and safer spaces for children.

Ekta Kapoor on the significance of the track

Speaking about choosing to highlight such an issue and teaching about the difference of touch on a show watched by millions, producer Ekta Kapoor shared that when Tulsi addresses such issues on screen, it inspires parents at home to start important conversations. Ekta said, “With Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, we understood that the trust audiences placed in the Virani family came with a deep responsibility to reflect reality. Introducing the Garima track around ‘good touch and bad touch’ wasn’t just a narrative choice; it was about breaking a long-standing silence through a platform that reaches millions. When Tulsi speaks about bodily boundaries in living rooms across the country, it gives parents the courage to begin the same conversation at home.

Emphasising the larger purpose behind introducing the sensitive track, Ekta spoke about how television can become a powerful tool for awareness when used thoughtfully. She said, “Teaching them about consent and safe touch through TV empowers them to speak up without fear and recognize when something is wrong. If this storyline inspires even one open dialogue and helps a child feel safer and heard, then the show has served a purpose far beyond entertainment.”

Watch Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi every day at 10:30 PM only on Star Plus.
