Central Railway’s Mumbai Division has collected Rs 71.31 crore in penalties, including Rs 3.51 crore from ticketless travel in Mumbai AC local trains during the financial year 2025-26, an official statement said.
The figures show a rise in both the number of cases detected and the penalty amount recovered.
Central Railway said that its Mumbai Division has made significant progress in its battle against unauthorised travel, collecting a total of Rs.71.31 crore in penalties from 16.16 lakh cases of ticketless travel between April 2025 and February 2026. It represents a 2 per cent increase in the number of cases and a 4 per cent rise in the penalty amount compared to the previous year.
The division has actively been conducting ticket checking drives across its suburban, mail, and express train services, focusing on Mumbai AC locals as well as regular trains, to ensure safe and lawful travel for all passengers.
Ticket checking from April 2025-February 2026
– Mumbai AC locals: 1.10 lakh cases detected and a penalty of Rs.3.51 crore recovered.
– First Class Coaches: 1.46 lakh cases detected and a penalty of Rs.4.66 crore recovered.
– Second Class Coaches: 11.68 lakh cases detected and a penalty of Rs.58.60 crore recovered.
– Mail & Express Trains (Fare Differences): 50,809 cases detected and a penalty of Rs.2.98 crore recovered.
– Unbooked Luggage: 1.40 lakh cases detected and a penalty of Rs.1.56 crore recovered.
Mumbai AC locals show notable increase in penalty collection
Special ticket checking campaigns in AC locals have shown a significant rise in ticketless travel detection. 94 AC local services are now operating, with 14 new services introduced on the Harbour Line this year.
In FY 2025-26, ticket checking in AC locals detected 1.10 lakh cases, leading to the recovery of Rs 3.51 crore in penalties. This is a 23 per cent increase in cases and an 18per cent rise in penalties compared to last year’s figures.
On average, 401 cases were detected daily, with a recovery of Rs.1.27 lakh daily.
High penalty collection in Feb
In February 2026, ticket checking teams uncovered 1.65 lakh cases of ticketless travel, collecting Rs.8.58 crore in penalties. The breakdown of penalties in February is as follows:
– AC Locals: 12,235 cases & Rs.38.56 lakh in penalties
– First Class Coaches: 12,651 cases & Rs.40.13 lakh in penalties
– Second Class Coaches: 1.13 lakh cases & Rs.6.68 crore in penalties
– Mail & Express Trains (Fare Differences): 16,359 cases & Rs.99.13 lakh in penalties
– Unbooked Luggage: 10,579 cases & Rs.12.83 lakh in penalties
Central Railway’s appeal to passengers
Central Railway has urged all passengers to travel responsibly by purchasing valid tickets to avoid inconvenience and penalties.
Passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance and ensure they travel with responsibility, Central Railway said.
