Previous budgets
The five-year term of the BMC house that was elected in 2017 ended at midnight on March 7, 2022. Since then, BMC has presented three budgets — 2023, 2024, and 2025 — through the administrator appointed by the Government of Maharashtra and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. Since then the budget has seen a focus on expenditure on big-ticket infrastructure projects such as the Sewage Treatment Plants (Rs 27,000 crore), the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, the last leg of the Coastal Road between Versova and Dahisar, the waste-to-energy plant at Deonar Dumping Ground, the road concreting works (Rs 17,000 crore), the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) and various bridges in the city.
Focus likely to be on infra and development
Each year, the BMC Budget has focused on planned works which are long-term projects and this year to it is likely that the major focus would be on city`s upcoming infrastructure and development projects. However, officials had earlier told mid-day that it cannot be said that the budget did not focus on local infrastructure needs of the city — enhancement in hospital or school infrastructures.
The budget operated without feedback that we get from elected representatives, which can shed light on local demands and alleviate needs in everyday life, an official had earlier stated.
Budget has increased over the years
The percentage of capital expenditure in the budget has increased from 36 per cent in 2022, when there was an elected body, to 58 per cent in 2025. The budget size also increased from Rs 38,515 crore in 2022 to Rs 74,366 in 2025, according to information from the Mumbai civic body.
