Amul pays tribute to Manipuri film Boong after creates history at BAFTA 2026

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) 2026 marked a proud moment for Indian cinema as the Manipuri film Boong, backed by Excel Entertainment and Chalkboard Entertainment in association with Suitable Pictures, became the first Indian film to win on the global platform. The historic victory at the prestigious ceremony has sparked celebrations across the country, especially in Manipur, with many calling it a defining moment for regional cinema on the global stage.

Amul`s topical tribute for Boong

Adding a touch of wit to the celebrations, dairy giant Amul marked the occasion with a special topical creative. Known for its clever, pun-filled tributes to major national and international events, Amul India shared an illustration congratulating the team of Boong for scripting history.

Set in Manipur, the film tells a touching story about family and hope. It follows a young boy named Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen, who dreams of reuniting his family. Raised by his single mother Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam Ningthoujam, Boong sets out on a journey with his best friend to find his missing father. The film beautifully captures innocence, deep emotions, and the strong bond between a mother and her child.

With this historic win, Boong has not only etched its name in BAFTA history but has also amplified the voice of regional Indian cinema on the global stage.

About Boong

Boong is directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by Farhan Akhtar, along with Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, Ritesh Sidhwani and Shujaat Saudagar. The makers, including Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Lakshmipriya Devi and Alan McAlex, were present at the event held at London`s Royal Festival Hall to receive the award.

Boong competed with popular international films such as Zootopia 2, Lilo & Stitch and Arco and still managed to win the award.

Producer Farhan Akhtar reflected on what drew him to the project in the first place. Speaking about his long association with director Lakshmipriya Devi, Farhan mentioned familiarity, trust, and a story that simply felt “right.”

He shared that he had known Lakshmipriya for nearly two decades and that the film, being set in a region rarely seen on the big screen, made backing the project feel natural.

“Lakshmipriya Devi and I have known each other for about 20 years. This film is set in a region of India from which we rarely get to watch films. It was nice to support that as well, and it`s a very heartwarming story. So, it just felt right.”

Boong was the only Indian nominee at the ceremony and has now become the first Indian film to win in this category..
