After Shivaji Park residents, those living in the periphery of Dr Norman Francis Lewis ground (Supari Talao) on Mt Carmel Road in Bandra West have raised complaints about dust pollution due to loose soil.

One such resident wrote to mid-day, saying, “We are fortunate to have the ground right in front of our residence, and it’s truly heartening to see children using the space daily for play and recreation. However, the lack of regular watering by the BMC [Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation] has become a concern. The dry ground leads to significant dust pollution, which constantly affects the surrounding residents and creates an unhealthy environment.” Civic officials told mid-day that immediate action would be taken to mitigate dust pollution.

Why is red soil layered on playgrounds?

According to BMC, different kinds of soil are used to top playgrounds and add a cushioning effect for players, preventing long-term or major injuries.

BMC’s response

According to BMC, water is sprayed at this playground every alternate night. This keeps the soil moist for two days at least, curbing dust pollution. Extremely hot weather, longer days during the summer, and occasional windy weather are likely to have aggravated the issue, according to an official.

“As moisture from the soil can evaporate faster in intense heat, it is possible that the spraying water on alternate nights is not sufficient at present,” an official said. Another official said, “Regular misting is done at all playgrounds, depending on their size and other demands. Wherever necessary, we do it as frequently as required.”
